The First Full Touch Haptic UI of Samsung ‘TouchWiz’

Following the development of Black User Interface in 2007, I took part in full touch ‘Haptic’ phone project in 2008. In this project, I contributed the UX team leader to receive Proud Samsung Faculty Award. ‘Haptic’ phone is a combination of digital and analog. It is a delicate adaptation of the Haptic feedback and an analog metaphor that users are familiar with. While 6 months of development, UI developers all around the world got together every day to review the model, and the model was modified for dozens of times a day. The form factors or needs for the interface from various countries and businesses were all different, and even how they perceive information was different in different cultural areas. Where do these differences come from? It brought up a question to me of how and why they perceive a device or technology differently, and the question came to my future research list.

Developing the World’s First Innovation Model Concept ‘Dual Standby World Phone’

Role in the Project: Project leader of ‘Duos’ user experience design, Concept development, and interaction design. Led design researches with SAMSUNG Design China and Beijing Samsung Telecommunications R&D Center .
Achievement: The first Mobile UX of Dual standby world phone of SAMSUNG Electronics. ‘DUOS’ Celebrating for 4 million sales in all over the world -Europe, Russia, China, Central and South America. ’DUOS’ Winning a Brand awards 2008
Main Concept: Maximize users’ coverage area : CDMA(TD-SCDMA)+GSM, EDGE & EDGE Dual-standby, Seamless service (Data+Voice) without switching between two numbers, Global roaming for two numbers. Separate Work & Personal Life : Separated Call/SMS image & Ringtone by each call. Easy to classify contact & message of each call

Dual Standby Model recognizes the connection environment (Context-Aware) and automatically set default mode to CDMA(TD-SCDMA) or GSM. For example, it automatically connects to cheaper connection available in anywhere users go on a business trip. It can automatically shut down the business communication channel after the users’ business hour if they use it for both business and personal purpose. Developing this, I also researched other fun and easy functions additionally, such as a privacy protection that hides all the call histories that were received to personal SIM. More personal settings like RSSI, icon, ringtones are also available for each SIM. In SIM switching process, I applied intuitive graphic user interface (GUI). With kind help of Beijing Research Center, I went back and forth between Beijing and Shanghai to research the user environment and communication style. Finally, I could find out what was the problem in interaction, and then I was able to develop the adaptive interface that works well with the environment of China. From that experience, I realized that no product, technology, design, or environment are dispensable.

Implementation of Touch Application ‘Sweeping Command’

Achievement: Personalized menu operation and affective mobile phone application on full touch panel
Main Concept: Fun & Easy access on a touch screen and emotional operation
Technology: Resistive overlay touch screen
'Sweeping Command' is an application developed by myself for touch panels. I came up with a concept and designed the UI in 2007, and it was applied to SCH-W699 (project Mentor) model for China in 2008, and in global Touch Haptic 2 & SCH-W850 model in 2009. Any application can be reached at once by registering a drawing pattern and mapping the pattern with the application. It is a one key operation action by Sweep. The personalized menu setting allows dial, memo, music, phone number search, messaging, and more. Conducting this research, I was able to obtain deeper understanding about how touch panel input works. This project has a great meaning to me because I produced many ideas for S/W applications like sketch memo and handwriting, and I could learn and master touch interaction principles.

Field Study of 1st and 2nd Generation "Chinese Little Emperors" 

I participated in user behavior studies to develop mobile phone concepts specialized for particular users (the first and the second generations of Chinese little emperors) from December 2007 to April 2008. Usability tests and participatory design research methods were utilized to evaluate their trend, lifestyle, characteristics of mobile phone purchasing behavior and usage, major usage pattern, and mobile phone preferences. Finally, the next mobile phone strategy was derived in ideation workshops. The second generation of little emperors and their rich parents, whose monthly income is more than 9 thousand yuans, were both the targets of the research.

Mobile phone usage pattern of the 1st generation of Chinese little emperors

The first generation of "Chinese little emperors" refers to people born in 1980s (ages 20-29) after the Chinese economic reform in 1978. They grew up taking all of their family’s love and financial benefits due to 1 family 1 child policy, and they now began to work in society. The population of this generation is estimated to be approximately 24 million. This investigation was to precisely understand their life style, mobile phone usage patterns, and design preferences in order to utilize as good resources for product innovation and design concretization.

Field Usability Testing in Mumbai, India

I participated in user behavior studies to develop mobile phone concepts specialized for users in India. We conducted focus group interviews and individual usability testing to understand the cultural preferences and needs of India population.
